Dear Members,
With the recent mailing of the USBA Board of Directors ballot,
we would like to voice a few opinions regarding the potential board members.
The racing season will soon be drawing to a close and we are now looking
forward to the next few years of training. This being said, we feel that
it is critical to have a strong and dynamic Executive Board that can adapt
to new changes and make informed decisions that move the organization
forward. As active biathletes, we feel that there are a few positions
within the board that will effect what direction USBA takes over the next
four years. These positions are the Chairman and the Vice Chairman. full

Jericho, VT March 3. The National
Championships at Ethan Allen Firing Range scheduled for next week have
been cancelled. The anticipated snow passed to the south and although
the Guard has made snow on the range, the trails are just to thin to support
racing. With no optimistic forecast, the Nationals will be re-located
& rescheduled for later in March. usbiathlon.org

From NBC's Chad Salmela -
If you can get to a TV midday today (Saturday, Feb 18), both women's and
men's pursuits will be run in entirety. We called live to tape (with just
a little editing--all Len bringing us in and out of the show), and while
the women's is good, the men's is FABULOUS. One of the best I've EVER
seen. Get people there around a TV and tune
in. NBC, should start at 11:00 CST, but double check your local listings.

The decision has been made to go forward with the Loppet this
weekend. Groomers are packing the new snow now. Most of the course
will be in good shape very soon. We will have a lot of work to add snow
in short sections where last week's warm spell destroyed the base.
We are asking all skiers, high school teams, and Loppet-lovers
to come out and help us shovel over the next four days. Piotr
Bednarski ((952) 237-0765) and Craig Rudd ((763) 242-0176) are
leading this effort.
The first group shoveling efforts will begin at 1:00
and 5:30 Wednesday at Wirth Beach. Please come out and join of
if you can. Anytime you can help, please e-mail Bill Dosset or call
Craig or Piotr and we will find something for you do to. We will
post schedules for shoveling times tomorrow and Friday soon (let me know
if you have a group that can help at a particular time).

Dear Athletes and Friends of the Loppet!!
The City of Lakes Loppet will have its annual
Trail Day on Saturday, Oct 29th, 9am-1pm in order to prepare existing
trails for winter and to add a few sections of new trail. This is a super
important event for the Loppet we have a ton to accomplish and we need
your help to do it in a few short hours. With lots of hands, it will go
quickly!
Like previous years, we will be primarily picking up
fallen branches, and removing brush from the ski trails. We be meeting
at 9am at the Wirth Beach Parking area (corner of Glenwood Ave and Theodore
Wirth Parkway) and we will hopefully be done by 1pm.
Please bring workgloves, rakes, snippers, loppers,
shovels, handsaws, and put your name on all your tools.
Also, bring a waterbottle carrier so we can keep rolling. We will
be working in a variety of locations- if you run late, please call me
at 952 237 0765 or Craig Rudd 763 242 0176, so we can point you in the
right direction.
Please email if you have questions, Piotr
PS, we can also use a few pickup trucks- if you have
one you can bring, please email me.

Report
from the St Cloud Times:
The body of the missing St. Cloud State University student from Sartell
was found Saturday in Monticello Township.
Andrea Alejandra Arriagada, 18, who had been missing
since Monday, was discovered in her car just before noon near Wright County
roads 131 and 37 by farmers.
The cause of death will be determined by an autopsy
later this week. There was no indication of foul play and no suspects
are in custody or being sought, according to Greg Findley, a sergeant
with the Wright County Sheriff’s department.
A rifle was found near Arriagada at the scene, though
it could not be confirmed whether it was the rifle she used for biathlon
that was missing from her home, Findley said.
Arriagada left her parents’ Sartell home, where
she lives, early Monday morning for Nordic ski practice but never arrived.
Her parents reported her missing after she did not return home later that
morning.
Arriagada is a 2005 Sartell High School graduate.
About 250 people attended a vigil for her Wednesday
night at St. Cloud State.

Mass
of Christian Burial will be on Thursday, October 13th at 11:30 AM at St.
Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Sartell for Andrea "Andy"
Arriagada, age 18, of Sartell, who passed away and will be greatly missed
by her family and friends. Rev. Lauren Germann will officiate. Friends
may call on Wednesday between 4:00-8:00 PM and on Thursday after 10:00
AM at St. Francis Xavier Gathering Space in Sartell. Parish Prayers will
be at 7:00 PM.

Funeral Home in Sartell.
Andy was born September 24th, 1987 in Concepci—n,

later lived in Albany, New York before moving to Sartell with her family.
Andy was a 2005 graduate of Sartell High School and was currently a freshman
at St. Cloud State University.
Andy was a very energetic girl who loved the outdoors.
She participated in soccer, Nordic skiing and track while at Sartell High
School. She also participated in Minnesota Biathlon and could often be
found taking part in hiking and camping trips around the state. Her other
passion was music; she was a member of concert band, choir and wind ensemble,
and she sang both at school and the church. While in college, she was
a member of the Nordic ski team and had recently made the concert choir.
Andy was also a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church and was especially
involved in the youth program.
Survivors include her parents, Jorge and Violeta Arriagada
of Sartell, her sister Paula and fiance Darcy of Columbus, and a very
large extended family in Chile.

We will be having a training camp on the North Shore, Tuesday,
Aug 15-Friday, Aug 18. Basically its an opportunity to get out and train
LOTS over 4 days. We will be primarily running on the Superior Hiking
Trail, and doing classic rollerskiing and of course strength and ultimate

Basic requirements are that you are able to run a minimum of 2.0 hours

pace. If you can't do this, it will be too difficult for you. If you are
not sure, talk to me- 952/924-0381. Cost will be $200 which will include
transport. We will be staying near Grand Marais in some rustic cabins-
Bally Creek Cabins/Bear Track Outfitters. We will be preparing our own
meals- cabins have mattresses but you need your own sleeping bags and
pillows. I highly recommend bring some type of sandal you can wear in
the water- we will be making regular stops to cool down our legs in Lake
Superior after training.

This very first session will be on a Thursday- all future sessions will
be on WEDNESDAY evenings. I apologize,
but there is a VERY important meeting regarding SNOW MAKING at Theodore
Wirth Park this Wednesday at 7pm, and I must be there (all interested
skiers welcome to attend).
We will focus on core strength and some general circuit
strengths. We will also include a few very specific ski strength exercises.
As the spring and summer progresses, we will add more plyometrics, sprints,
etc. Please bring a towel (in case its muddy) and a waterbottle. There
is no weather cancellation, except for extreme lightning.
The spring session will run
through June 8th. The summer session will run June 15-Aug 12th.

Dear Twin Cities Biathletes-
Please join us for a biathlon picnic on Tuesday,
May 31, 6pm- 8pm at Minnikahda Vista Park in St Louis Park
(directions below). We will have a pot luck dinner and afterwards
we will do wind sprints and plyometrics. Ok, we'll skip the wind-sprints,
and throw the frisbee around. Please bring an entree and/or dessert and
a drink to share. I will bring plates, plastic ware, cups, ice.
On the serious side, we will have a discussion regarding a number of MN
Biathon issues, the most important being snowmaking at Theodore Wirth
Park. All ski teams and clubs in the Twin Cities metro have been
asked to raise $100,000 by mid June in order to kick off the construction
off a 3.5km manmade loop at Theodore Wirth. City of Lakes Loppet
has been working with the Mpls Park Board to make this happen- much of
the funding is in place, but its up to the ski community to raise the
balance of what is needed, and to help us then go after foundations, corporations,
and individual donors. MN Biathlon has been asked to raise $2500+ in direct
contributions.
I have included a letter below that describes the project and the funding
issue we now have. I will make a brief presentation regarding the
snowmaking project at the picnic so you will have all the info.
You can also visit http://www.wirthwinter.com/
for the full scoop.
In the meantime, I hope you will consider making a donation toward the
snowmaking. My goal as far as the snowmaking is that we have 100%
participation towards the snowmaking - if you can afford $50- that's
awesome. If you can afford $2500, that's even better. I know
you have all appreciated having perfect skiing at Elm Creek. I know for
many, its quite a drive. Well, Theodore Wirth will have a longer trail
(3.5km), more vertical, a large stadium area, and at least 50% of the
course will be in the woods. If you do donate before our picnic,
please make sure you include your club designation, so we credit as a
club (MN Biathlon). Even if you are not right next door to Theodore
Wirth, I encourage you to contribute something- having another quality
place to ski in early December will go a long way to increase the
variety and enjoyment of skiing.
Directions to Minnikahda
Vista Park:
From Hywy 100 in St Louis Park, exit on Excelsior Blvd going East.
Follow Excelsior approx 1 mile and go right (south) on France Ave.
Go approx 400 m and go west (right) on 39th St- go one block and the park
will be on your left. We will meet at the covered picnic area.
Thanks, Piotr
