As most of you probably know, the races will be held at mt shark,
approx 45 min drive from Canmore. You can wax at the Nordic Center - Bill
will check out a wax cabin on Tuesday afternoon. If you arrive before
that, you can check out a wax room at the biathlon building.
All athletes (except those staying with Bill at Rocky
Mnt Chalet) should pay their own entries in Canadian $ on Tuesday afternoon
at the biathlon building at the nordic center. Official training will
start at 10am on Wed at Mt Shark. Please be there by 9:30am to meet with
Bill and get organized for Zero. Bill have info from the Coaches meeting,
so please be on time.
You will have a Meeting with Bill (race details, Bibs)
at Rocky Mnt Chalet at 7:30pm on Wednesday evening- please be on
time. The phone at Canadian Rockies Chalet is 1 800 386-7248 if you need
to contact Bill.
Bill will have a 15 passenger van, so if you need rides, be sure to discuss
it with him.
You will need a Canadian Firearm Declarations
and US Customs declaration.
Download the Canadian
Declaration form. You can usually put several rifles on one
form and save money at the border, but it might be useful if you have
this form filled out.
Also, it saves hassles if you have a US Customs form for your rifle- you
can get them at the HHH Terminal in MPLS or at border crossings at the
customs offices. All they show is that you took the rifle out of the country
and therefore they should let it back in without any taxes, etc.
Download the Invitation to the North
American Champs in Canmore that may be needed a in conjunction with
the Canadian Firearms Declaration. (Might help you get across the border
with less hassle.)

We are currently organizing the MN Biathlon trip to North American Biathlon
Championships in Canmore, Alberta (this is also US Junior National Championships).
This is a great end of season event and should have a large Canadian junior
and senior field. The Canadian Rockies are really beautiful, and the skiing
can be great in March.
You should discuss if this event is appropriate for you with your club
coach. I would ask you discuss it with your parents and coach right away,
and email me back by Monday, Feb 21 if you are pretty sure that you will
be going. Feel free to call me with questions 952 924 0381
There will be three races, March 30 Sprint,
April 2 Pursuit, and April 3 Relay. Travel dates are Tuesday, March 28th,
returning Monday, April 4. Flights will be direct from Minneapolis
to Calgary. It is a possibility to drive, and we may have a few people
who will (its approximately a 22-24 hour drive).
I will arrange housing, food, ground transportation and flights. Approximate
costs are as follows:
flights $450
room/board/entries/ground transport $550
I will be able to more accurately determine prices once I have an accurate
count of athletes attending. Please email or
call me by Monday, Feb 21 to indicate if you a reasonably sure
that you will be attending.
Currently the coaching staff is:
Piotr Bednarski
Bill Meyer
Scott Anderson
I am anticipating approximately 25 athletes from Minnesota and we will
be joined by 5 more from Alaska.
thanks, Piotr

Thanks to all that played this years version of Fantasy Biathlon.
Even though it was a last minute game we had 13 players, which was more
than I had expected to get. And while Piotr led from wire to wire this
year, there were changes in the leader board after every race (I thought
that I had second place locked up, but Pete's racers made a big move on
the last day).
And the winners of a Digital
Skier videos are:
» Kyle R.
» Josh B.
We have some ideas for next year including:
- an more automated login and scoring
- a full season game
- an Olympic game
- changes to the scoring (you will just need to pick the ski brand that
finishes in the top 5, and a new bonus for the mass start)
- including relays in the scoring
If you have any comments on the game or any ideas on how to improve it,
feel free to shoot me an e-mail.
Again thanks for playing,
-Ryan

dates had been January 15, 16 but the races had to be cancelled due to
extremely cold temps. Mt Itasca currently has 12 inches of manmade snow
covered with an additional 14 inches of natural snow, so we are confident
skiing will be good in early March.

Twin Cities Biathlon Community-
I am writing to ask for you help in getting the City of Lakes Loppet course
ready for the Feb 5th 35k race. As you know, things are
a bit icy now, but we have a great base. We need to repair some
of the south facing slopes and reinforce some of the climbs and descents.
We will meet en masse at the Wirth Beach parking lot on Saturday, Jan
9th at 12pm, and will work to 3pm. There will be volunteers from
all parts of the ski community. If we get a lot of people we will
get it done quickly. You will need to bring shovels, tarps
and/or plastic sleds to move snow. Having a few people on skis would
not hurt, so you can get to far flung spots. We will also have snowmobiles
to shuttle people around.
If you are late, you can contact me at 952 237 0765 , John Munger 612
618 9681 or Craig Rudd at 763 242 0176 and we can tell you where to go.
Thanks,Piotr
Please RSVP if you can attend. If you have any large sleds suitable
for moving snow, please bring them.
0001-0027-2005
There will be a Pursuit Format Time Trial at Mt Itasca on this
coming Sunday, 1/30. This would be great training for those that are going
to Trials in Maine next week.
Zero at 10am, start at 10:45am, 4 stages with penalty
loops, approx 10km men, 8km women.
0001-0027-2005
We will be having a biathlon time trial on Monday, Jan 17th at
the Greystone Biathlon Range. Zero will be at 12noon, start at 12:45.
We will ski the course at 11:40am as a group- the course will not be marked so
please be ON TIME if you plan on attending.
This is an informal event, no registration fees, no bibs. We will
most likely do a Mass Start format with 4 shooting stages, 10km for men,
7.5km for women.
The forecast is for -1F, sun, and virtually no wind, so it should be really
pretty decent. St Cloud got 10-12 inches of snow, so the skiing
is excellent there.
The event is informal, but will run on time. Please arrive by 11:15am
so you have time to get organized and ski the course with the group.
The Greystone Biathlon facility is across the street from the main gate
of the St Cloud Prison. To get there take Hywy 10 until you
see the prison on the south/west side of Hywy 10. At the east
end of the prison wall, take Minnesota Blvd (it only goes south).
Follow approx one mile up hill, and at the top of the hill take a
left through a yellow gate. Go approx 75 yards and take your first
left again. Follow approx 400 yards and park.
You can reach Ion Senchea at 320 224 3691 cell, or me at 952/237-0765
if you have questions.
0001-0014-2005
Twin Cities Biathletes-
Our newly elected USBA President, Bill Lilly, will be in town visiting
on Friday night, Jan 14th. He's here
to tour Minnesota and meet with all our clubs. We will have a social gathering
at the Old
Chicago Pizzeria at 2841 Hennepin Ave in Uptown, one block north
of Lake Street. We will be there 6:30pm-9:30pm.
If you need to reach me on Friday evening, my cell is 952/237-0765.
Please RSVP via email if you can come. Sorry for the late notice- Bill
had planned to come to the NorAm races, and when they were cancelled,
he decided to come out anyway and make a tour of our clubs. By the way,
juniors are welcome and encourage to attend (no beer for you).
Hope to see you Friday, Piotr
0001-0012-2005
Dear Athletes and Coaches-
The NorAm #5
races for this weekend, Jan 15, 16 at Mt Itasca are cancelled.
After consulting with USBA, Biathlon Canada, and the National Weather
Service, we decided that there was no way the weather would cooperate
and give us temperatures above -4F. The National Guard may still run an
event on Thursday, but this is still to be determined. It is possible
that the March 5, 6 race will be designated a NorAm. This is being determined
by USBA and Biathlon Canada.
thanks, Piotr

Bemidji, MN, home of the nationally known Finlandia race, major
kilometers of ski trails and a community of ski minded individuals is
gaining a new biathlon facility and a new biathlon club, part of the MNBiathlon
program family. Several notable MN biathletes hail from the Bemidji area
including Clarrisa Werre, Justin and Aaron Nistler, and Ross Roetman.
With the technical help of MN biathlon and the support
of the local ski community, Hilton Bakker, a Bemidji physician and past
member of the US Jr Nordic Team has taken the lead in organizing a club
and constructing a 15 shooting point range on his property, located 2
miles north of County Road 22 at the west end of Three Island Lake.
Currently 6 Girls and 2 Boys have shown major interest
and attended the organizational meetings. Several attended the recent
Fall Festival and more recently the MNCup #1 race at Mt Itasca where they
participated in the Novice event….. their first biathlon race!!!
Construction got underway in late November, with the
range, penalty loop and connections to the existing looped trail system
all being roughed out. As the ground froze and halted construction, 70%
the range was usable along with the penalty loop and a 0.5km, 0.8km, 1.5
km and 2.0 km ski loops. With snowmobile/Tidd Tech grooming equipment
ready to go, another few inches of snow and the facility will be ready
for training use. Probably later this week or early next.
Future plans include completion of the range, penalty
loop, additional ski loops, a storage building and a warmup cabin.

A Tough Start to the Biathlon Season
It was a brutal start to the biathlon season, with 40mph
winds, blowing winds and windchills dropping to the single digits. Nevertheless,
45 racers competed in today's MN Cup#1 Mass Start Biathlon race. Kurt
Farchmin of Duluth and Kevin Patzoldt of Grand Rapids dueled it
out for the first three shooting stages, shadowing each other on the ski
track and in the range. Shooting in high winds is very difficult, and
these two only recorded 3 misses for the first 15 shots. Coming into the
final standing shooting stage side by side, Kurt Farchmin decisively took
control of the race, hitting 3 of 5 targets in a near white out. Kevin
Patzoldt failed to hit any of his five and had to settle for second place.
Ben Byrne of Bovey was third.
In the Women's race, Sonne
Nordgren of Grand Rapids easily won the 8km Mass Start, with Brnyden
Manbeck and Sara Gaalaas, both of Grand Rapids, placing 2nd and
3rd. results pdf

Looking forward to seeing Liv Grete
VAL SENALES (VG) Norwegian Women’s coach Svein Tore Samdal is looking
forward to seeing Liv Grete Skjelbreid Poirée in Nordic ski races.
“We can always use good skiers, and I’m excited to see where
she stands when they have to compete against each other in freestyle during
the season opener at Beitostølen.
If she is going to be considered for the team, Liv Grete would need to
be among the top three in Norway.
According to Samdal, Poirée would not be interested in going international
without having a chance at being within the top seven or eight.

Mühlegg not coming back
Cross country skier Johann Mühlegg will not attempt a comeback after
having served his doping suspension.
According to the Spanish newspaper Marca, the German-born Spaniard has
given up plans of coming back to cross country skiing after negotiations
with the Spanish ski federation did not go the way he wanted. The Spanish
ski president, Eduardo Roldan, has confirmed that Mühlegg has given
him notice that he is retiring.
“He called me and said that he no longer wanted to come back."
Mühlegg tested postive for doping during the Olympics
in Salt Lake City and was banned from competition for two years. His suspension
was up in February, and he had made it clear that he was going to compete
for Spain again. As of late, he has been in negotiations with the Spanish
ski federation, who laid down a list of conditions for his return. They
included, among other things, that he needed to include himself in the
team, and not train by himself. In addition, Mühlegg needed to cut
contacts with certain people, including a Portuguese fortune-teller.
Mühlegg, who was eventually forced to give up his three Olympic gold
medals, accepted these conditions at first, but later changed his mind.
“Now the case is closed for our part,” explained President
Roldan.

Norwegian biathletes waiting
for snow
The Norwegian biathlon women have tested the snow in Ramsau, Austria,
but the men’s team is still waiting for snow in Tignes, France.
The are being patient until the end of the week.
The Norwegian women have been enjoying themselves during the past week
in Ramsau. According to sports director Arne Idland, fantastic weather
and new snow have made for perfect conditions for the majority of the
training camp. The Norwegian star Liv Grete Poiree has done many of her
own preparations for the camp. So has Ole Einar Bjørndalen, who,
after having tested new skis in Val Senales last week, chose to stay in
Italy because winter is still waiting to begin in France.
“The rest of the men’s team will tentatively be at a dry-land
training camp in Haute Maurienne. The training is going as it should be,
but the boys are anxious for snow under their skis,” says Idland.
Snow is waiting
The weather forecast for the rest of the week is positive for upcoming
snow. Then the men’s team will move from Haute Maurienne to Tignes.
“The athletes are staying in France a little while longer, but if
snow does not come towards the end of the weekend, we have another reserve
spot in Swiss Le Diable Retes,” says Idland.
The training camp will go until Sunday, October 24. After that, the team
plans to do its final season preparations on Norwegian snow. Current plans
call for Liv Grete Poiree to race in the season opener for both cross
country skiing and biathlon on the 13th and 14th of November. The remaining
biathletes will likely concentrate only on biathlon. Bjørndalen,
Lars Berger, and Frode Andresen are among the men that are also attempting
specialized cross country skiing, but the trio has an upcoming challenge
at a Norway Cup mass start in biathlon that same weekend.

Norwegian National Team down
to three men
VAL SENALES (VG) Norwegian National Team Coach Krister Sørgård
is in Italy coaching one of the thinnest national teams ever, consisting
of only three men.
Only Frode Estil, Tore Ruud Hofstad and Jens Arne Svartedal were out on
the ski trail at 3000 meters of altitude yesterday.
“We hope that we will have an additional three men coming here on
Tuesday,” says Sørgård.
Anders Aukland, Kristen Skjeldal, and Odd Bjørn Hjelmeset have
all been sidelined with sickness.

Bad Idea for Finnish Cross
Country Team
The Norwegians are reacting now that the Finnish coach caught for doping
is back.
The president of the Norwegian cross country ski team feels that it is
an incredibly bad idea to associate with a coach that was part of the
doping scandal at the World Championships in Lahti, Finland.
“It is terrible for international cross country skiing, and especially
terrible for Finnish cross country skiing. It would be wise for [the Finnish
ski team] to avoid the people that ruined everything,” says Bjørnar
Håkensmoen to VG (a Norwegian newspaper).
The Norwegian ski president says that he does not have any formal opportunity
to react to the fact that the Finnish Cross Country Ski Team is letting
Jarmo Riski participate at the Finnish women’s training camps -
even though he is banned for life from competitions in accordance with
FIS.
Personal Trainer
Riski was the head coach for the Finnish women when the doping scandal
took place at the World Championships in Lahti, Finland in 2001. Now he
is acting as the personal trainer for, among others, national team member
Virpi Kuitunen, who, along with Milla Saari (formerly Jauho), was caught
for doping at the Lahti World Championships. He is one of 8 or 9 personal
trainers for the Finnish team’s 13 to 14 total racers.
General secretary Jari Piirainen says that Riski was granted permission
to be a coach at a national level after the Finnish ski federation got
a clear signal from FIS and Finland’s anti-doping agency.
“He is only the personal trainer for some of the racers, with the
same rights as the other personal trainers. He does not receive a salary
from the Finnish ski federation,” explains Piirainen, who feels
that Riski’s impact is not problematic.
The Finnish men’s coach in Lahti, Kari-Pekka Kyrö, was accused
of being the architect behind the doping scandal, and was convicted and
fined this summer for his involvement in the 2001 scandal. As with Riski
and two Finnish doctors, Kyrö was suspended from the sport for life.
It was meanwhile discovered that Kyrö was acting as a personal trainer
for Kaisa Varis at the World Championships in Val di Fiemme last year.
That was revealed when she tested positive for EPO before the World Championships.
Everything went wrong
“The last time a personal trainer was involved like this, everything
went wrong,” notes Bjørnar Håkensmoen.
“If the reputation of Finnish skiing is going to be reestablished,
the people involved in the 2001 scandal are not the right people to be
involved in the system today,” he says.
During the trial against Kari-Pekka Kyrö earlier this summer it was
revealed, according to the Finnish media, that Jarmo Riski was not very
involved in Kyrö’s doping program before and during the Lahti
World Championships. His comeback as a personal trainer has therefore
not been especially controversial in Finland.
In a TV interview some months after the Lahti scandal, Riski told interviewers
that he, as a coach, was “obviously” aware of what was happening.

Dear Biathlon Friends-
I just wanted to sent a quick update regarding the Biathlon BOD meeting
this past weekend in Burlington, Vermont. I am happy to say that
it was a very productive meeting. Bill Lilly was elected as Interim
President. His previous involvement in biathlon has revolved around
running the biathlon club in Rochester, NY, and following his son's progress
as a biathlon competitor. Bill is a no nonsense guy who has very
strong analytical skills and a great way with people. I asked Bill
to run for Interim President and am very glad he chose to do so.
Another positive move at the BOD meeting was the establishment of a Planning
Committee which will start mapping a High Performance Plan for USBA through
the Vancouver Olympics. Though the final makeup of the committee
is not yet set, it looks like it will be chaired by Andy Shepard.
The other committee members will be Max Cobb, Dave Gieck, Cory Salmela,
Tim Derrick and me.
As far as the election goes, the Interim President will be charged with
heading up a new Nominating/Search Committee which will proactively look
and recruit new candidateor the reorganized Board of Directors.
A election timetable will be announced shortly, but most likely, the election
will take place in late 2005, with the new board officially in place by
spring of 2006. In the mean time, the Nominating/Search Committee
will look for top notch candidates within and outside of our sport so
that we a top notch BOD to take us through the 2010 Olympics.
Another issue that came up is the lack of funding for this years Junior
Team. The Board has committed to putting Junior Team funding at
the top of the priority list for any new funding that we obtain this fall.
USBA Marketing efforts are being led by Max Cobb who is confident that
a Jr Team sponsor will be found this fall.
I thank those that took the time to express your concern with the current
state of affairs in USBA. I am optimistic that things will move
along. Please join me in welcoming Bill Lilly as our new Interim
President and give him your vote of confidence. If you want to email
Bill, his email address is wlilly
AT rochester.rr.com.
Please put your support behind Bill while he takes on some of the
issues that will put USBA back on a course for success.
thanks,
Piotr Bednarski

The Van and trailer pulled into West Yellowstone at approximately
3:30AM local time (MST for those keeping track). Snow has been good and
thanks to the hard driving snow of the past two days the trails are well
covered and ready for good skis. Willy and Kyle have put together a short
synopsis of the past few days. read Willy and

Dear Twin Cities Biathletes-
As most of you probably know, most of the clubs in Minnesota have their
own race uniform. Then all the clubs have a common warm up jacket,
vest, fleece, bibs, and parka.
We do not yet have our own race uniform design. If we do want to
create one for this season, we need a rough design completed by the end
of next week (October 15th). The manufacturer can finalize the design.
I am looking for designs to be submitted ASAP- in an electronic
form preferably, though a good drawing would be ok. Color schemes
need to roughly match the current warm up jacket and bibs (they shouldn't
clash).
If you are interested in pursuing a design, or have a fantastic idea but
need help putting it to paper or pixels, please contact Piotr right away.
thanks, Piotr

Dear Friends-
As you may have heard, my biathlon coaching job basically came to an end
on April 1 of this year (no joke). While I am still involved in biathlon,
I have started a new personal endurance coaching business (XC Skiing,
Running, and General Fitness)- its called Go! Training. The website is
now up and running- www.gotraining.us
I invite you to check out the website (designed by Ben Kremer, kremerdesign.com),
and to keep me in mind if you have friends or aquaintences who need coaching
help. Please keep in mind that for Training plans, clients can really
live anywhere- I can communicate via email and phone. For training sessions
and lactates, they would need to live in the Twin Cities. I would say
that Go! Training is best suited for people who are getting more serious
about their cross country skiing or running and have some specific goals
they want to acheive.
Go! Training offers:
1) Training Plans and ongoing training advice for cross country skiing,
distance running, and general fitness (3 months - 12 month plans)
2) Blood Lactate Profiles with analysis and training zone recommendations
3) Group and private training/technique sessions for xc skiing, running,
and strength. Currently, Go!Training is running 3 group training sessions
a week for xc skiers.
Any help you can provide me in networking and finding clients would be
greatly appreciated, a would any feedback you can provide regarding the
website. thanks,
Piotr Bednarski

Hello everyone! I am writing on the drive home from a two week
training camp which was held at Solder Hollow, the Salt Lake City Olympic
venue. For those who were wondering what happened to me all of a sudden,
or those who didn’t even realize that I was no longer in Minnesota,
I will explain my current situation. I graduated in early June from high
school. Before this, I had to make a very hard decision that many many
people my age have to make… “What am I going to do next year?”
I was definitely not certain of my answer; however I did know one thing.
I knew I wanted to do biathlon. I also felt like I was ready for a bit
of a change. So I contacted the Canadian Junior National Biathlon coach,
Geret Coyne, who’s based out of Canmore, Alberta. I met Geret and
the Canadian Junior National team two summers ago, when I attended a summer
training camp of theirs. I had spent a few days that summer in Canmore,
and I really liked the town a lot. It’s a little outdoorsy town,
near Banff, surrounded by the Canadian Rockies. Canmore is also the home
of both the Junior and Senior National teams for cross country and biathlon
in Canada. So, I decided that Canmore was going to be my new home for
6 months.
Geret’s team that I am training with is a group
of 9 other biathlete between the ages of 17 and 20. Most are members of
the junior national team, or the Canmore Nordic Centre team. There are
5 other girls besides me, which I find very exciting because I really
never had that many girls to train with back home in Duluth. I have found
that the sporty atmosphere of the town and the beautiful mountains and
all the fun training they provide has made me love this sport even more.
It’s nice to have a little change from the norm, however I do find
myself missing Minnesota quite a bit and am looking forward to returning
in December. I hope all is well with everyone. Take Care, Brit

If any one would like to send me an e mail, I would love to hear from
you. Britsalmela AT yahoo.com

Last Saturday (March 13th), a small group of Duluth biathletes
and I (Bjorn Bakken) got together to see if we had the stuff legends are
made out of. Skiing 100km wouldn't normally
seem like such a huge achievement. Some people ski that in a week; others
can do it in a couple of days. But no, we weren't interested in what most
people can do, so we set out to see if we could do it in a single day
at the Korkki Nordic Ski Center just north of Duluth. Yes sir, Bjorn
Bakken, Gary Colliander, Brit Salmela, and Kai Salmela were going
down in the history books, or at least the Korkki Nordic guest book. full
