Cook and Bouchard Win On Final Day of Junior
Trials
Annilies Cook of /Saranac Lake, NY
and Kelsy Bouchard of Fort Kent,
ME, each won their first competition of the three day Youth and Junior
Biathlon
World Championships Trials today at the Mt. Itasca Biathlon Center
to earn spots on the US Team.
Cook, the top ranked junior woman and Bouchard, ninth
place at the 2003 World Championships had been in the middle of the pack
for the earlier sprint and pursuit format competitions. Cook's results,
although not as good as she expected, had her in a position to make the
team with an average performance today. But Bouchard was on the verge
of missing the event she had been preparing for all year. The low point
was 16 penalties in Thursday's 10K Pursuit Format. But with wins today,
both young women qualified for the team and should be among the top US
performers at the Championships in Haute Maurienne, France January 24-31.more

Minnesota Athletes Dominate In Cold Conditions
Minnesota natives won all four categories in sprint competitions today
as the Youth and Junior World Championship Trials opened under cold, clear
conditions at the Mt Itasca Biathlon Center.
Junior National Coach Vladimir
Cervenka, who is also serves Mt Itasca Nordic Director, was beaming
after the competitions. He commented, "It was a beautiful day. We had
a great competition- everything went very well. Conditions were perfect.
We had about 5 inches of new snow last night and it was about 4 degrees
this morning. After the races, I saw a lot of smiles on faces. We had
a great first day."

Manbeck and Byrne Dominate Sprint! Snow
flurries and a stadium covered in 2-3 feet of man made snow groomed in
perfect corduroy set the stage for the first midwest biathlon races of
the winter season.
Brynden Manbeck (Grand Rapids, MN) won
the women's 6km Sprint, and Ben Byrne
(Bovey, MN) won the men's 7.6km Sprint by convincing margins. The
competition at Mt Itasca was characterized by tricky winds, making sight
corrections difficult for some of the less experienced shooters.
In the women's race, Sonne Nordgen of
Marine on St Croix placed second, 48 seconds back, closely followed by
Duluth Biathlon's Brit Salmela, one
second later. In the men's race Veteran Ben
Kremer finished 58 seconds behind Byrne, and Kurt
Farchim was third 1:13 off the winner's pace.
Mass Start, Manbeck Shoots Clean!....well,
almost .. Sixteen year old Brynden Manbeck
put on a impressive show of marksmanship and skiing today at Mt. Itasca.
She shoot clean her first three stages of the 8.6km mass start race. Coming
into her 4th stage, the second standing stage, Brynden hit the first 4
or her 5 targets, missing her last very last target to the disappoint
of the hometown crowd. Shooting clean in a 4 stage race is a rare occurence-
even at an international level. There will be many more chances for this
talented young athlete. Sonne Nordgren
finished in 2nd place, 1:35 out, skiing very fast, but unable to overcome
the curse of the penalty loop. The big surprise of the day was a very
determined Rebecca Mueller of Brainerd,
MN, who had a spectacular day in the range, hitting 17 of 20 targets and
finishing 2:23 out of the lead.
The men's race was an exciting horse race down to the last of the 4 shooting
stages, with the lead continually changing. Ben
Byrne, Kurt Farchmin and Ben Kremer were among the early leaders,
but it was sixteen year old Mark Johnson
of Grand Rapids, MN who put on an impressive display of shooting and skiing
to surprise the entire field when he moved into first place after the
last shooting stage. Unfortunately for Mark, he ran out of real estate
before the pair of Kurt Farchmin and Ben Byrne caught him in the last
kilometer before the finish. Farchmin and Byrne dueled out the last lap,
with Farchmin pulling ahead in the last 400 meters.

Brett Miller of Hackensack, MN died
Nov. 17, 2003 in Park City, Utah, after a long battle with melanoma. Brett
was 26 years old. Brett moved to Park City in 1999. He loved the mountains
and was a master of numerous mountain sports - Alpine skiing, back country
skiing, motocross and mountain biking, in addition to biathlon and cross
country skiing.
Before moving to Park City, Brett was a top junior cross
country ski racer and biathlete. Brett joined Team Birke in 1992, and
under the coaching of Steve Gaskill, he progressed quickly. For his senior
year in high school, Brett attended the National Sports Academy in Lake
Placid where he focused on his biathlon training.
He made his first World Junior Biathlon Team in 1994,
and made subsequent teams in 1995, 1996, and 1997. He was a member of
the 1997 US. Junior team that placed 5th at the World Junior Championships
Relay. Brett competed at the World University Games in 1997 and 1999,
placing 4th in the relay in the '99 Games in Slovakia. Brett was know
by his coaches and teammates as the "go to guywhen it came to relays.
He always put together fantastic performances when his teammates were
depending on him. During the 1999 World University Games relay, Brett
skiied the anchor leg, and moved the U.S. team up from 7th place at the
exchange to 4th at the finish.
Brett will be missed by his friends in Utah, in Minnesota,
and many others places where there are mountains and snow. Everyone who
knew Brett knew that he had a style all his own: he was unique, independent,
and uninfluenced by the trends or style of the day.
Brett's independent streak did not prevent him from
making strong friendships. To the contrary, Brett was a very social person,
and enjoyed spending time with his friends on the mountain, at work, or
out on the town. He cared deeply for those close to him. Brett was a fighter-
even after the toll of several rounds of chemotherapy, he was confident
that he would win his battle with cancer. When it became clear in the
last days that he would not win this battle, it was Brett who comforted
those close to him.

Dear Biathlon Supporters-
A biathlon supporter at Faegre and Benson in downtown Mpls, is arranging
a reception for USBA to present their marketing/sponsorship opportunities
to corporations. This reception is on Dec 2
at the Faegre and Benson offices in Minneapolis.
USBA Presiden Lyle Nelson, as well as Andy Sheppard, and Max Cobb are
all coming out to present- this is a really good group as far as getting
results. I am writing to see if any of you have ideas and contacts with
firms that would be interested in coming to hear the presentation and
attend the reception. Its a pretty soft sell- most of the companies there
are Faegre and Benson clients, so they won't want their clients to be
put "under the gun".
If anyone has contacts with major firms- marketing or upper administration,
please let me know. We can send
out an invitation to them asap. This reception is also a great way for
Minnesota Biathlon to get some publicity and potentially pick up some
sponsors.
Thanks and please get back to me ASAP if you have ideas- December 2nd
is approaching rapidly.

A small but hardy field of mountain bikers took to the trails at Elk River's
Hillside Park on Saturday. Temperatures in the field kept numbers down,
but if you could keep your toes warm it was great biking. Leaves with
a coating of frost and snow made conditions challenging. In the overall
sport class, Ted Loosen of Eden Prairie,
took first, with Jim Bell, St Cloud,
and Eric Guse, St Louis Park in second
and third.
In the Beginner race, Paul Mihalko of
Elk River placed 1st, with Mike Loerzel
of Andover in 2nd, and Doug Scott of
St. Paul in 3rd. Thank you to those who came out to race, and a thanks
to the race volunteers. results

A new 20 position biathlon range was just completed this past weekend
at the Greystone Nordic Trails on the grounds of the St Cloud Correctional
Facility. The biathlon range built was by Minnesota Biathlon CODP in cooperation
with the St Cloud Nordic Ski Club and the St Cloud Correctional facility
staff.
The project required clearing, grading, and seeding
a range 50 meters wide by 70 meters long, as well as creating protective
berms downrange and along the sides of the shooting range. A 100 foot
long protective wall was also added along an exposed section of ski trail.
The range is situated in the current stadium area of
the Greystone Trails, and sits in a sheltered depression that provides
natural berms for the shooting range as well as protection from the wind.
Work on the range has been proceeding all summer, with some of the initial
work being done by the City of St Cloud Parks Department as well as STS
crews from Sherburne and Stearns County. Joe
Teff, a St Cloud Nordic Club member and an employee at the Correctional
facility, coordinated the project and was critical to completion of the
project.
Ion Senchea is the
St Cloud area biathlon coach. He is also coaching St Cloud Appolo and
St Cloud Tech high schools this winter, and will be running a biathlon
program at the new biathlon facility. Ion is a former Romanian World Cup
biathlon team athlete, and brings considerable experience and enthusiasm
to his coaching.
The new range in St Cloud will be used primarily for
training, but is big enough to host regional events. Use of the new biathlon
range is open to Minnesota Biathlon members during scheduled practices
with Ion Senchea (pronounced yan).
If you are interested in biathlon training in the St
Cloud area, call Ion at 320 224 3691. Minnesota Biathlon provides instruction
and equipment for beginners- training is oriented to athletes ages 12-18,
but adults are welcome to participate as well. photos

As some of you may have heard, Brett
Miller is currently undergoing treatment
for skin cancer. Brett is fighting hard, and is in pretty rough shape.
He does not have health insurance and the cost of treatment is extremely
high.
Brett, now 26 years old, is from
Hackensack, MN. He was a member of several World Junior Championship teams
as well as World University Games Teams, and a long time member of USBA,
MN Biathlon, and Team Birke. He attended National Sports Academy in Lake

Hello, I am making some big changes....the first one here is that
my email is now JBTroutner at earthlink.net and my aol account is going
away today.
The second is that I have won a round trip to Europe
with the Minnesota Army National Guard and will be training over there
with another one of my fellow biathletes and soldier--John
Kurtz. To the biathlon community, John and I will be thinking of
you and trying to catch as much action on Eurosport as we can--if they
get that in Eagle Base in Bosnia...if they don't -they will have it before
he and I leave! I will have an army email account but that is for official
use only and I will send that out to my fellow guardsman when I resurrect
it. See you on the net. Jill Troutner

Biathlon hotshots Jill Krause
(St Cloud) and Jacob Beste
(Minneapolis) tied the knot this past weekend in St. Cloud.
They both started their biathlon careers (and their
romance) with MN Biathlon at biathlon training camp at St. Johns University
during the summer of 1995. Jill attended St Cloud Apollo H.S. and Jake
attended Minneapolis Southwest. Both Jill and Jacob now train in Burlington,
Vermont with the U.S. National team and are focused on preparing for the
next Olympics. Currently Jill Krause is the #1 ranked U.S. female biathlete-
she finished 25th in the 7.5km Sprint at the World Championships in March.
Jacob is ranked 6th in the U.S., and competed at several Europa Cups and
the World University Games this season. more photos

I was involved in a minor accident at the

It was a White-SUV. A Jeep Grand Cherokee I think with a plate that reads

Also I am offering a reward if any information leads to her insurance
