North American Championships and
U.S. Masters Biathlon Championships will be held
March 20-22, 2008 in
Mt. Itasca, Coleraine, MN. Download the pdf for more information.
Information Pdf
Dear Biathlon Supporters-
The North American Championships/ US National Championships are being held at Mt Itasca next week- March 20, 21, 22, Thursday, Friday, Saturday. We are short on officials/volunteers to help on the Range, Course, Stadium, and Doping Control. Generally volunteers are needed from 9pm-1pm, though some may be needed earlier in the morning. Note that with changing weather conditions, races may start earlier than initially planned.
This is the biggest biathlon event yet to be held at Mt Itasca- we hope that any parents, ex-athletes or long time supporters would be interested in coming up to watch and help out running the races.
If you can come up for one, two, or all three days to help out, please email oonadog@northlc.com, or call 218/245-3522 Paula Byrne, Volunteer coordinator, with the dates you can come up, and what tasks you would prefer to help with. She will try to put you in your preferred area, but there is no guarantee on that one.
thanks for your support,
0002-0012-2008
Twin Cities Biathlon will be holding an informal race this Sunday at the Elk River range.
- Zero @ 10 AM
- Race @ 11 AM
- Mass Start - PPSS - 5 x 2K - with penalty laps
- Forecast Temps in the 20s with some wind.
Informal means -- no charge, no prizes, no times. I hope to get enough volunteers to handle the range. If not, well pull our own targets as well.
If possible, please let Lou Chouinard know if you are planning to attend.

The 2008 Biathlon World Championships is taking place this week in Ostersund, Sweden.
All the events can be seen live on www.usbiathlon.org , and recordings
of all the events can also be viewed at archived on http://events.usoc.org/BiathlonVideos.
The archived video coverage has commentary by Chad Salmela and James Upham.
(note, you should use Internet Explorer as your browser for viewing).
The top US result so far has been for Tim Burke who place 9th in Saturday's 10km Sprint
and 10th in Sunday's 12.5k Pursuit. Our local hero, Caitlin Compton, competed in Saturday's
7.5km sprint, placing 70th. Check out all the events - its exciting coverage, and great for
watching great skiing and shooting technique. Chad and James are great commentators, adding lots of
detail and background to the sport of biathlon.
0002-0012-2008
Volunteers are needed who can help with a variety of roles at the Jr
World Team Trials, Dec 28, 29, 30. If you could help out for a few
hours on one, two, or three days, it would be greatly appreciated.

2008 World Junior Trials originally scheduled for Anchorage, Dec 28-30
have been moved to Mt Itasca, Coleraine, MN. Race dates will be the
same, Dec 28, 29, 30, with official training on Dec 27th, and unofficial
training on Dec 26th.
The races have been moved because of lack of snow in Anchorage and
the lack of any alternate venue in Alaska of the size and quality needed
to hold a national event. The USBA thanks the Anchorage Organizing
Committee for their hard work planning the event and working hard to
get their new range ready for Jr Trials. We realize this is a disappointment.
Anchorage has already been offered the right to host next seasons World
Junior Trials.
Registrations will be transferred from Anchorage to Mt Itasca. Those
that have not registered yet, but wish to compete, will need to fill
out a Mt Itasca Registration form, which I will send shortly- also,
it will be posted at www.minnesotabiathlon.com and here at usbiathlon.org.
The Mt Itasca Biathlon Association is currently negotiating a hotel
deal for biathlon competitors, and I will send out hotel information
on Sunday.
Teams should plan to fly into Duluth or Minneapolis/St Paul airport.
Please feel free to email me if you have questions. We apologize for
the late change, but its difficult to judge when its too late to give
up on mother nature.
Like the events at Anchorage, there will be categories for Seniors
and Masters.

The goal is to hold your breath briefly when the target
is in the sights. But you have to be careful not to hold your breath too
long or you'll start to get tunnel vision - especially if the skiing has
left you breathless.
Cross-country ski racing can be a pretty complicated
sport, with lots of variables like weather conditions, wax, equipment,
training and technique to worry about.
But some people like to make the sport even more challenging
by adding rifles.
We're talking about biathlon, the Nordic sport that
combines cross-country ski racing with target shooting.
Requiring a combination of strength, endurance and mental
focus, biathlon's roots go back to Scandinavians' hunting and warring
on skis.
It's now an event in the Winter Olympics, and international
biathlon competitions are said to be the most popular televised winter
spectator sport in Europe. Variations of the sport combine running, biking
or roller skiing with shooting. In the future, biathlon competitors may
be firing laser beams instead of bullets.
But in the United States, biathlon is about as obscure
as luge, a niche sport within a niche sport.
That's the case even in Minnesota, where groups like
Minnesota Biathlon and the Mount Itasca Biathlon Association have been
successful in grooming young local athletes for spots on Olympic, world
championship and junior championship teams. keep

A big thank you goes out to Piotr Bednarski, Ben Kremer, Mike Gruye, and
Dale Thompson for the 3 hours they spent on Friday doing a range clean
up.
A special thank you goes out to Brian Wray, the newest member of MN Biathlon
who participated in his first work day!
The area around the targets (front, sides, and back) and both sides of
the railroad tie retaining walls were cleared of debris and vegetation.
All brush and dead wood was cleared from both sides of the range back
to the tree line so mowing access should be improved.
All targets were adjusted, lubed, and repaired as necessary. All
targets were cleaned of debris and lead splatter. All targets were
painted. We have some new parts and ropes that we will be buying
and adding later.
Target #2 was set up as “always paper” until a new target
can be purchased and installed.
It was a lot of work but it was worth it. The range really looks
nice!
Juniors start training twice a week in June (Tuesdays at 8 AM and Thursdays
at 10 AM). I’ll send out another e-mail to schedule the Master’s
practices.
Thanks again for all the hard work!

Here are the final point totals for the MNCup races. Note that all races
were counted-- so that if you missed a race not only did you not get any
points-- but your competitor who you might normally beat-- moved up one
place in your absence!!!

January 31, 2007
It's that time of year again. Last winter it was Torino
and the Olympics with NBC. This winter it is the Biathlon World Championships
on Fox Sports Net (FSN). While I won't be in a mini-suite downtown Torino
with cool swag and the experience of a lifetime, I will be in a little
part of the world called "Suedtirol" or South Tyrolia, where
the mountains are spectacular, the food is incredible, and the people
speak a dialect of German and Italian that's pretty hard to figure out,
even if you speak both languages fluently.
The Antholz valley is situated high in the Italian Alps just south of
the Italian/Austrian border. You can actually ski to Austria from the
biathlon venue. On good snow years, they get dumped on heavily, then
the clouds clear and the place is a sun-soaked winter wonderland. I used
to race World Cups here as an athlete, and it is one of my favorite places.
My brother, Cory, and I leave Duluth tomorrow a little before 1:00 p.m.
for Munich. I go to Chicago and fly direct on United while he goes from
Minneapolis to Amsterdam, then to Munich, so we'll fly together to Minneapolis,
and some 15 hours later we'll meet back up in the Munich airport early
Friday morning where we'll pick up a car and drive the two hours south,
through a thin slice of Austria, past the Olympic city of Innsbruck,
Austria, over the Brenner Pass, and into Northern Italy. We will drink
lots of Lavazza and try to stay awake Friday as jet lag sets in. We'll
try to stay awake for the opening ceremony, which the organizers have
promised likes of which have never been seen for a biathlon worlds. Cory
is on a dual mission: 1) to help the television production by communicating
with our producer in New York City, tie up any loose ends, and make sure
we have what we need for the shows to go seamlessly, and 2) serve as
the cultural liaison and guide to a group of the United States Biathlon
Association Board of Directors.
My role in this World Championships is to bring all the excitement of
the sport to the American television audience. With Tim Burke and the
rest of the American men's squad, it could be a very exciting worlds
for the Americans!
Early Saturday morning, we'll take our spot in one of 30 stacked steel
boxes next to the shooting range where we'll bring the action to several
portals in the American media. We will air over the next two weeks on
Fox Sports Net in the northern tier, as well as on the New England Sports
Network (NESN), and the World Championships Sports Network (WCSN), which
is a new cable network focusing on Olympic sports in non-Olympic years.
Right now, WCSN is mostly web-based but they are in 1 million households
on cable, trying to build a viable market. Online, you can find the webcast
for the IBU Biathlon World Championships under "Schedule" if
you miss the shows on FSN.
Henrik Forsberg will join me in the booth the first few days. Henrik
was one of the most consistent performers in cross country skiing from
Sweden throughout the 1990s, and is wife of the greatest female biathlete
in history, Magdalena. Henrik actually switched to biathlon for a few
years and had several podium finishes on the World Cup. I've known Henrik
and Magdalena for about 10-12 years and met Henrik at he and Magda's
all-night 30th birthday party in 1997 at their home in Sundsvall. Henrik
speaks perfect English and already does commentary for FIS Cross Country
Skiing and IBU Biathlon for Swedish television, but won't be working
in that capacity in Antholz. It appears as though he may be testing skis
for the Swedish team, and when he's done each morning, he'll make his
way to our sound booth. After the first few days, however, Henrik has
to head back home to Sundsvall, and it looks like I'll be speaking solo
after that.
Below is the schedule of the shows. I hope you get a chance to watch
all or at least some of the action. The FSN schedule for airing the IBU Biathlon

Johnson solid in 3rd win, McNamee tops all
women
Jr. World Championship Team Named
Coleraine, MN
Two days before ringing in the New Year no one would
ever have imagined a rainstorm in Northern Minnesota. Athletes awoke
to a downpour, but by the time they finished breakfast giant snowflakes
were falling and disappearing as they landed in puddles that grew overnight.
The final day of the U.S. Biathlon Jr. Trials brought out the best in
wicked weather, but it was the nerves that were shaking the most and not
the trees from the gusting winds. Each athlete has eight rounds instead
of the normal five to clear five targets. The task seems simple but a
break in focus easily spells disaster resulting in lost time and penalty
loops.
In the Jr. Men’s race Mark Johnson was the only man officially qualified
for the Team. Brandan Ostroot of Caribou, ME, Russell Currier of
Stockholm, ME, and Newt Rogers of Ft. Kent, ME each faltered in the range
leading to at least one penalty loop and the desperate need to push harder
on the ski tracks. When the day was said and done, each of the three
had qualified for the Team separated by no more than a half point.
Mark Johnson won for the 3rd straight day by 57 seconds with one penalty.
The most exciting and tightly contested race came again in the Youth Men’s
race. Leif Nordgren of Marine on St. Croix, MN topped the field
with clean shooting and a mere 21 seconds over Travis Man-Glow of Burlington,
VT who suffered 3 penalties in the standing position. Man-Glow however
had the speed on the tracks to make up the extra distance in penalty loops
to grab his second podium of the Trials. Finishing in 3rd was Justin
Tyner of Baxter, MN just 44 seconds back with two penalties.
Brynden Manbeck captured her second win in as many races with smooth clean
shooting. Ellen Anderson finished second with one penalty in prone
1 minute 3 seconds back followed by Meagan Toussaint of Madawaska, ME
13 seconds behind Anderson and with two penalties.
In the Youth Women’s race Hilary McNamee continued to show that
she was well over the sickness she suffered earlier this week as she won
the Youth and Jr. Women’s race. Separating herself from the
pack just after the prone stage McNamee chased down Brynden Manbeck and
entered the range in the lead as the two ladies settled in for the standing
shoot. Manbeck again showed that she is the veteran as she shot
clean first and left with a small lead. McNamee again chased and
took the lead, and in the final stretch was able to hold off a charging
Manbeck for the win. Janna Widness of Anchorage, AK finished 2nd
with one penalty just 45 seconds back of McNamee and Addie Byrne of Bovey,
MN finished 3rd also with one penalty 1 minute 33 seconds out.
Representing the U.S. at the Junior Biathlon
World Championships in Martel, Italy January 22-31 will be:
Junior Men
Mark Johnson – Grand Rapids, MN

McNamee storms back; Tyner overtakes Roberts
in final stretch for win
Coleraine, MN
Questions were asked all around
yesterday as to why Hilary McNamee didn't race. Not able to start yesterday
because of food poisoning, the 16 year old from Ft. Fairfield, ME stormed
back treating the crowd with a come from behind win in the Youth Women's
race. Starting in the order of finish from yesterday, McNamee started
last, but with only 5 seconds between each starter creating a tight race.
After 4 penalties in the first prone, McNamee missed only 3 of the final
15 shots winning by a margin of 1 minute 6 seconds over Kalie Mix of Grand
Rapids, MN. Rounding out the top three was Janna Widness of Anchorage,
AK with 9 penalties.
In the most tightly contested
race of the day, it came down to two training partners fighting for the
top spot. Wynn Roberts of Battle Lake, MN started first on the day and
Justin Tyner of Baxter, MN started 4th. Roberts held the edge missing
just 5 of his 20 shots while Tyner missed 7 of 20, 3 of which came in
his 3rd stage. Skiing together on the final loop, Tyner overtook Roberts
on the final downhill and never let go of the lead winning by 22 seconds.
Moving up from 5th place was Ethan Dreissigacker of Morrisville, VT who
hit 16 of his 20 shots and finished just 32 seconds behind Tyner.
Laura Spector of Hanover, NH
won with just 5 penalties with strong skiing by 1 minute 7 seconds. Finishing
2nd was Ellen Anderson of Ely, MN also with 5 penalties. Rounding out
the top 3 was Meagan Toussaint of Madawaska, ME. Toussaint usually a sharp
shooter struggled hitting just 10 of her 20 shots. Yesterday's winner,
Brynden Manbeck of Grand Rapids, MN did not race today.
Mark Johnson of Grand Rapids,
MN led the Jr. Men out of the start gate and built his lead winning by
a margin of 2 minutes 47 seconds. Johnson shot smoothly hitting 16 of
his 20 shots. Finishing 2nd was Brandan Ostroot of Caribou, ME who hit
15 of his 20 shots. Russell Currier of Stockholm, ME struggled hitting
just 2 of his first 10 shots, but maintained a strong focus and hit 7
of his last 10 shots.
Tomorrow will conclude with the
Mass Start Relay Format competition. The U.S. Jr. World Championship Team
will be announced tomorrow afternoon.

No Surprises on first day of Biathlon Junior
Trials
Coleraine, MN
Snow has been hard to come by
this season, but the Mt. Itasca Biathlon Club has done their magic once
again in providing Nordic enthusiasts with some great skiing. A 2.5 kilometer
loop of man-made snow was prepared to near perfection for the U.S. Biathlon
Jr. World Championship Trials which started today. With snow falling steadily
all morning conditions gradually toughened as 1-2" fell by race end. Athletes
from around the country competed today in the Sprint Competition and the
results didn't have too many surprises at the top.
Brynden Manbeck of Grand Rapids,
MN and Laura Spector of Hanover, NH are the top two returning females
from last seasons' Jr. National Team and today they finished 1-2 in the
Jr. Women's category. Manbeck finished with only one penalty to win the
opening race and Spector recorded the fastest course time, but four penalties
left her in 2nd place just 48 seconds behind. Meagan Toussaint of Madawaska,
ME finished 3rd with 4 penalties.
Mark Johnson of Grand Rapids,
MN won the Jr. Men's competition recording one penalty in both his prone
and standing stages. Finishing 2nd 1 minute 21 seconds back was Russell
Currier of Stockholm, ME with five penalties and in 3rd place was Newt
Rogers of Ft. Kent, ME.
The Youth Women's race held some
mystery as many of last year's Jr. World Championship Team moved up into
the Jr. Women's category. Hilary McNamee of Ft. Fairfield, ME and Kalie
Mix of Grand Rapids, MN were the only two returning members. McNamee was
struck with food poisoning yesterday and didn't race; Mix finished in
4th with five penalties. Addie Byrne of Bovey, MN won with just two penalties
beating out Janna Widness of Anchorage, AK by 1 minute and 16 seconds.
Widness had three penalties; Lindsey Wallis of Woodbury, MN finished in
3rd with five penalties.
In a sport where a break in
focus can create a difference, Travis Man-Glow of Burlington, VT had only
one miss in the prone position and was holding a 15 second lead over Jr.
National Team member Wynn Roberts of Battle Lake, MN. Needing just two
hits to secure his win Man-Glow quickly saw his lead slip away as he left
the range with four penalties. Roberts was solid with three penalties
winning by 36 seconds. Luke Busta of St. Cloud, MN was 3rd with three
penalties.
Saturday will be the Pursuit
Format Competition. Athletes will start in the order of finish from today's
Sprint Competition in 5 second interval starts.

The big Minnesota event this year is Junior World Team
Trials, Dec 28-31. These races are open to seniors and masters as well.
This is a great racing experience for all juniors- if you are just starting
out in biathlon you should not be intimidated. Its a serious race series,
but its a great learning experience to be be at the range several days
in a row. In order to improve in biathlon you need to compete a lot- this
is a great place to do it, and this year its in your back yard. I highly
encourage all the juniors who have been training this year to come compete.
Talk to your coaches about arranging housing as a group- the entry/information
forms are online at www.usbiathlon.org and
here.
Housing packages at Wendigo Lodge are very affordable (Wendigo is a really
nice place and there is a buffet dinner available. There are also 3 races
at Mt Itasca in early/mid December in order to prepare for the Jr
Trials. These are great training opportunities and its nice to really
make the best of the home field advantage we get for the Jr Trials.
Junior and Youth World Team critieria are also posted on the www.usbiathlon.org
site.
Coleraine is located 6 miles northeast of Grand Rapids
in the northwoods of Minnesota. The area is known for its abundance of
lakes and forests - providing an ideal setting for outdoor activities
such as skiing, hunting, fishing and snowmobiling. The region maintains
more than 200 K of skiing on 29 groomed trails. The winter sports center
at Mount Itasca features the 30 point biathlon range, 5 K of competition
trails with man made snow.

Nisswa Cup race of the year will be held this coming Saturday,
May 20th at the Nisswa Range.
No cost
No Awards
No prizes
No refreshments
Low key-- have some fun-- work on the shooting.
Zero will be at 9;00 am
The first race will be a 2.5km sprint-- with two shootings-- prone and
standing
Interval start- 30 sec.
Summer biathlon running rules will apply- rifles will be in the rack on
the range facing to the rear. Athletes will run in, walk a circle
around behind the rack, pick up the rifle, go to point, shoot, walk as
they finish the circle back behind the rack again-- and then out
to the penalty loop or course running. Penalty loop is 70 meters.
Then we will do some sort of pursuit with the same distance and shooting.
Depending on numbers and range congestion, we may try an offbeat favorite
of mine called a reverse pursuit-- the last person in the first race gets
that much of a head start-- and etc.
Novices are welcome and will either have a separate race-- or can join
in and shoot prone twice or prone on standing twice. If totally inexperienced,
will do separate event with mentors.
In any case-- come and join us--
