European Biathlon #6

Hi Again,
Short summary of the results from this mornings racing in Poland and Slovenia.

In Poland, the only two from the US were racing by virtue of being in the top 60 from the Sprint race yesterday, Paul Schommer, WI, finished in 48th place, shooting 3,2,0,0 and ending 5:07 back of the winner. Alex Howe from Vermont was 51st shooting 1,2,1,0 ending 5:42 back.

The way the pursuit works is the race is started with the time behind the winner of the sprint, who goes out as the clock starts. So the time back today reflects both the time lost today plus the time lost yesterday. They start from 4 gates as their time behind comes up on the clock. The men ski 12.5km total in 2.5km laps with shooting at 4 stages, PPSS. They fill into the shooting points from the right so there is no guarantee they will be near their zero point on the 30 point ranges. The coaches try to give a correction after the first shooting to help with the second prone.

The US women had no one in the top 60 so did not race today.

In Slovenia, the US fielded all their athletes. In the 10 km Men’s sprint race, Travis Cooper, AK was the top for the US shooting 0,2 and finishing in 30th, 2:22 behind the Russian winner who missed 2 also. Next was Vasek Cervenka, 0,2; 2:24 back in 31st place. Followed by Cam Christiansen, 1,0; 4:10 back in 51st and Cody Johnson, Maine, who cleaned finishing 4:10 back also for 52nd place.

In the Women’s 7.5km Sprint, Siena Ellingson shot clean to finish in 20th place, 1:57 behind the Russian winner who missed 1. Amanda Kautzer shot 0,2 and finished in 44th, 4:12 back.

All the Juniors will do another sprint tomorrow at Pokljuka before moving to the Czech Republic for the Open European Jr Championships.
